Saturn public joint stock company was organized in 1964 and functioned as a diversified enterprise for the development and production of chemical and physical current sources, sensor and transducer apparatus, electrochemical generators and electrical engineering products for special and general industrial purpose.
In the late 80's–early 90-ies the enterprise profile was finalized as that of the developer of solar arrays and storage batteries for spacecraft (hereinafter – SAs and SBs for SC), and measuring and control equipment for those products. Over the years of its existence, Saturn PJSC has equipped with solar arrays and storage batteries more than 1,200 spacecraft operating in all types of orbits.
Guaranteed life time of SAs and SBs is 15 years in geostationary, and 7-10 years in low earth orbits (hereinafter GEO and LEO).
Saturn PJSC is included into the List of the key joint stock companies, in respect of which the State Space Corporation, Roscosmos, implements a uniform governmental policy (decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 440 of 12.05.1998). Saturn PJSC is a strategic enterprise (regulation No. 1226-R of the Russian Federation Government dated 20.08.2009).
The quality management system (QMS) of Saturn PJSC functions during designing, manufacturing, testing and maintenance of solar arrays, Nickel-Hydrogen and Lithium-Ion storage batteries for the power supply systems of spacecraft and terrestrial power plants, control and test equipment, and special technological equipment for the production of solar arrays and storage batteries, and meets the requirements of GOST ISO 9001-2011, Provisions of the RK-11-KT, RK-11, RK-98-KT, RK-98, RK-88, state standards.
The Expert Commission of the CJSC "Certification Centre for Rocket and Space Technology" conducts annual scheduled inspection of the Quality Management System of Saturn PJSC. The results of routine inspection are presented in the Act, according to which the certified Quality Management System of Saturn PJSC is functioning effectively, and the expert Commission recommends confirming the validity of the Certificate of QMS conformity to the requirements of normative documentation.
The Main Activities
The main activities of the company are:
- Development and production of solar cells and solar arrays for space application;
- Development and production of Nickel-Hydrogen and Lithium-Ion storage batteries for multipurpose spacecraft and other areas of application;
- Development and production of test equipment.
In 2015, the activity of Saturn PJSC was aimed at the decision of tasks on the development and production of solar arrays and storage batteries for spacecraft (modules) in the following areas:
Fundamental space research:
- «Resonance» – a space complex for research of interaction of electromagnetic waves and particles in the inner magnetosphere of the Earth;
«Luna-Glob» – a new lunar orbiter for a comprehensive study of the surface of the moon using the lander;
«Luna-Resource» – the Russian automatic interplanetary station with a lander for remote studies of the moon and its exosphere, as well as integrated contact studies of the moon in the South Pole area;
«Spectr-M» – space observatory to study galaxies in the millimeter wavelength range;
«Spectr-UV» – a space telescope for imaging and spectroscopy;
«Spectr-R» – a Russian space radio telescope;
«Interheliozond» – a spacecraft, the Russian project to study the Sun and the inner heliosphere from close distances.
Study and work in the framework of international obligations fulfillment in the field of space activities:
«ExoMars» – a joint Russian-European project for geological research and search for traces of life in the subsurface layer of Mars;
«NEM» – a scientific-energy module for powering the International Space Station;
«KazSat-2» – a spacecraft for stable satellite communication of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
CH-6 / CH-9 – Eurasian satellites (for China);
«Angosat» – an Angolan-Russian project for the expansion of satellite communications services, Internet access, radio and television broadcasting in the Republic of Angola;
«Egyptsat» – Egyptian spacecraft designed for Earth remote sensing with high spatial resolution.
The Solution of Target Tasks:
- «Electro-L» – a series of Russian satellites for solving problems of hydro-meteorological support;
- «AIST-2D» – Russian small spacecraft for solving scientific-technical, experimental and educational tasks;
- «Resource-DK» – Russian spacecraft for Earth remote sensing in the interests of national economy;
- «NA» – a small scientific satellite for the monitoring of geophysical fields;
- «Bion» – a series of Soviet and Russian spacecraft, developed by JSC SRC Progress", designed to conduct biological research;
- «Gonetz» – a Russian multifunctional system of personal satellite communication;
- «Arctica-M» – a series of meteorological satellites;
- «Resource-P» – a series of Russian spacecraft for Earth remote sensing.
Other activities of the enterprise include:
development and production of special technological equipment;
development of all types of manufacturing jigs for physical and chemical power supplies production;
using the results of space activities (hereinafter – RSA) in the territory of Krasnodar region (i.e. gradual formation of a navigation field of centimeter precision, and processing of Earth remote sensing data (satellite images).
Experimental base of the enterprise comprise:
set of equipment with the overall dimensions of 2.2 × 2.2 m for conducting all types of mechanical and environmental tests, including thermal vacuum and thermal cycling tests in the temperature range from -180 °C to 100 °C;
set of equipment for conducting electrical tests of solar arrays and storage batteries in a wide range of loads and temperature ranges;
set of equipment for calibration of standard solar cells.
Technological Base of the Enterprise:
- Technology of semiconductor production, including the production of photovoltaic cells based on Gallium Arsenide.
Technology of chemical current sources, including powder metallurgy, composite materials manufacturing, and production of Lithium-Ion storage batteries;
Welding technology (argon-arc, contact, diffusion, electron beam);
Mechanical engineering technology, including rotary draw-forming of thin-walled shells;
Thin film technology;
Manufacturing technique for a wide range of tools;
Procedure of drawing, alignment, and hardening of thin glass plates (up to 80 µm);
Method of research and processing of Earth remote sensing data.
