Solar Arrays

Saturn PJSC has been developing and producing solar cells and solar arrays for space application since 1971. During this period more than 1200 solar arrays of total area exceeding 20,000 square meters have been produced.

Solar arrays (hereinafter SAs) by Saturn PJSC are operated in all types of near-Earth orbits, and in deep space conditions.

Our company participated in many space programs, such as “Resource-DK”, “Gonets-D”, “Molniya”, “Ekran”, “Electro-L”, “Phobos-Grunt”, “Spectr”, “Orbcomm”, “GLONASS”, "Luna-Glob", "Luna-Resource", "Interheliozond", "ExoMars", "Resonance" and others.

Development and Production of Solar Arrays

The enterprise carries out works on designing, manufacturing and testing of solar arrays, including photovoltaic cells (PVC).

Saturn PJSC has its own technique for silicon solar cells production. Dislocation-free single-crystalline silicon of p-type, doped with boron and grown by Czochralski method with the orientation [100], and specific resistance of 12 Ω·cm +35 % (7.8 to 16.2 Ohm·cm) is used for solar cells production.

The enterprise has organized a full production cycle of multi-junction GaInP/GaAs/Ge solar cells, including:

  • Epitaxial growth of GaInP/GaAs/Ge structures by МОСVD method;
  • Post-growth operations;
  • Test and measurement procedures.

Characteristics of Solar Arrays

  • Solar arrays are produced on all types of frames (grid, string, film, honeycomb, metal);
  • A number of original design-technological solutions protected by patents are used in SA design;
  • Solar arrays ensure high performances both in orbit and on-ground;
  • Specific-mass and life characteristics of solar arrays correspond to the latest world designs.
